World Heritage Trail Wachau, 8 Days

Krems | Dürnstein | Weißenkirchen | Spitz | Melk

Highlights

Self-Guided Tour. The steep hills of the Wachau region form some of the most stunning scenery along the River Danube. The pleasant climate lends itself perfectly to the success of orchards and vineyards, many of which you will see during your week of hiking. You’ll be following the famous “World Heritage Trail Wachau”, along the jagged ridges of the Danube Valley. Over the next few days, as you wind through the valley along some of the many walking routes, you will be transported back in time as you explore one of Austria’s oldest cultural landscapes. Apricot gardens, endless vineyards and quaint hamlets dot the area, and there will be plenty of time to sample some of the delicious home-grown fruits and wines that this part of Austria is so well known for.

Day 2: From Krems to Dürnstein, ‘Vineyards’

This morning you can enjoy a stroll through lush vineyards and enjoy magnificent views over the Danube, the charming city of Krems and the ancient monastery of Göttweig. Crossing the hills, you’ll reach the famous Dürnstein ruins for more incredible landscape views, before arriving at the banks of the Danube.

Day 3: From Dürnstein to Weißenkirchen

Taking the ferry from Dürnstein to Rossatz, you’ll head into the beating heart of the Wachau region. Pass the largest apricot growing area in the whole of Austria and follow the historic tracks up to Seekopf, where you can get a great view of the Alps. Here there’s an optional walk along the Danube, passing through fruit-rich orchards to the ferry.

Day 4: Day off in Weißenkirchen

The pretty town of Weißenkirchen is surrounded by sunny vineyards and dense green forests, as well as the famous gothic parish church. You could visit some of the nearby wine villages such as Joching and St Michael, explore some of the fascinating local museums or enjoy a thrilling boat tour of the Danube. For those looking to relax, perhaps sit back with a glass of local wine in one of the taverns, or if you prefer to stay active, then enjoy a hike on the Achleiten circuit and meet a local wine-grower.

Day 5: From Weißenkirchen to Spitz

Say goodbye to Weißenkirchen as you head along the wine trail, passing picturesque wine cellars before reaching the heights of Seiber. Enjoy a steep climb through the forest to Buschandlwand and enjoy jaw-dropping views from the observation platform. Alternatively, you could take a different route through the vineyards to the famous wine community of Spitz an der Donau.

Day 6: From Spitz to Melk, ‘Ruin Aggsbach’

Sail across the Danube by ferry, reaching Maria Langegg. From here you’ll wind along the St Jacobs trail to the ancient ruined fortress of Aggsbach. Marvel at the views of the Danube valley as you explore the fortress. Heading downhill, you’ll then catch the bus to Melk.

Day 7: From Melk to Krems, ‘Danube Cruise’

Your final full day in Austria is spent visiting the colossal Melk monastery, strolling around its beautiful grounds. You then take to the Danube again, returning to Krems by boat. Looking out onto the river, you’ll see all of the highlights you have discovered over the last week, including Spitz and Dürnstein.
