Description

Styrian Salzkammergut, 7 Days

Bad Goisern | Altaussee | Gößl | Tauplitzalm

Highlights

Self-Guided Tour. ‘Ausseerland’ is a hidden gem in the middle of Austria, breathtakingly beautiful, it is cradled by the Salzkammergut Alps and is only accessible through alpine passes. The highest lake plateau of Middle Europe is the large alpine pasture ‘Tauplit’. This lake plateau is surrounded by the ‘Totengebirge’ a native name which translates into the ‘Dead Mountains’. Despite the seemingly eerie name this pasture remains one of the most active spots within the region.

Day 2: From Bad Goisern to Altaussee

Travel from Bad Goisen to Predigstuhl, the very sough after hiking spot, via a short taxi ride. Once within Predigstuhl you will hike past rustic cabins, and serene alpine pastures, all the while with the majestic summits in your view as you arrive in the Ausseerland. On your hike the only place that you will find for a refreshing break will be the alpine pasture of Hutteneckalm, this particular pasture will provide you with a gorgeous view on the UNESCO heritage region ‘Hallastatt Dachstein’. Finally, you will complete your hike into the quaint village of Altaussee where many artists have spent their summer, and you will spend the night. While in Altaussee you can enjoy their large forests and flower fields and explore their landscape and limestone rocks.

Day 3: From Altaussee to GößI/Grundlsee

The continuation of your hike will start by travelling along the lake Altaussee, with its incredible view of Loser Mountain. You will cross the Tressen saddle as you continue along your hike to the next lake on your destination. During this cross you will be presented with the picturesque view of the mountain range along the way. As you travel to GößI you will have the opportunity to visit lake Toplitzsee, a mysterious lake thought to hold treasure in its depths. You will then reach GößI adjacent to lake Grundless where you can enjoy a rowing along the lake in their traditional wooden boats.

Day 4: From GößI/Gundlsee to the Tauplitzalm

The next route on your hike will guide you out of the valley, along the quick flowing streams descending from the mountains, and through the alluvial area, and out of the valley to Ödernalm. Heinrich Harrer once called this area one of the nicest locations on planet Earth. As you make your final ascent over the Torl you will find yourself at the shores of a mystical little lake, continue this path around and you will arrive at the Tauplitzalm, located atop a high plateau.

Day 5: The circular walk from the Tauplitzalm

On one of Europe’s highest plateaus is the Tauplitzalm, which will provide for one of the greatest opportunities for your hike. Within the Tauplitzalm is the 6 lakes walk that will wind you though a route rich with views of the mountains and to lakes tucked within them. Hiking to the peaks of the Tote Gebirge mountain range is considered an almost spiritual experience. Along the hike is a plethora of flora and fauna such as snow roses, gentian, alpine rose flowers, and the native chamoises.

Day 6: From the Tauplitzalm back to Bad Goisern

Once over the Hocalm you will hike past two lakes, which are hidden among the high mountains, lake Steirersee and then lake Schwarzensee. You will continue your hike downstream of these lakes and through the forest. The final part of your hike will take your through the blooming narcissus fields as you hike past Tauplitz. Finally, you will take the train from Tauplitz back to Bad Goisem.
